Job Description

Special Olympics is a year-round program for young people and adults with an intellectual disability. Athletes can be as young as five and there is no upper age limit. Individuals who compete in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness, motor skills and greater self-confidence. They exhibit courage and enthusiasm and build lasting friendships. These life skills enhance their ability to live normal productive lives. The Special Olympics movement can ultimately transform communities by inspiring people to open their minds, accept and include people with intellectual disabilities.

Ten Pin Bowling is held on a Monday night (fortnightly) during the school terms at Sky City in Central Hamilton. There are two leagues - 2 gamers and 3 gamers. The bowlers need coaching in core skills as well as including the social aspect which is important for these athletes to build friendships. The athletes enjoy their time at bowling and do very well despite their challenges. It is a great role for someone who knows about ten pin and would love to give back to the sport in a special way. You don't need to be world-class. You need empathy with the athletes and the ability to help them be better at their game with fun as well.


  • Mature and friendly.
  • Understanding of differences and the ability to include everyone, no matter their challenges.
  • Some coaching will be given to the successful applicant(s).
  • A Police background check is required for this role. 

Time commitment:

  • Fortnightly on a Monday during the school terms from 6-8pm.
  • Sometimes the athletes travel away to tournaments. This will be discussed with the successful applicant(s
